Yeardley Smith, who plays Lisa Simpson on "The Simpsons," has had a successful career in film and television. Here are my top picks for her best work outside of Springfield.
In this James Brooks film, Smith plays the friend and agent of Greg Kinnear's character, Simon. Her best scene is when Simon is in the hospital after being beaten by a hoodlum. She is funny and so touching at the same time.
2. "Herman's Head"
Smith showed, even before "The Simpsons," how she shines as part of an TV ensemble. Her high-pitched voice served her well as she debated with other parts of Herman's mind.
Nancy, Smith's character, basically sets off a series of events that leads Phil, played by Daniel Stern, to find a better life with someone other than his wife, or Nancy. Her wailing soliloquy is hysterical.
This is a fun and romantic film starring two of my favorite actors, Jeremy Piven and Sherilyn Fenn. Yeardley Smith plays Lulu, in another winning performace that proves there are no small parts, only small actors.
5. "The Legend of Billie Jean"
Yeardley Smith is one of many talented actors in this film, some before they were "discovered." She plays a teen named Putter, living in Texas. The cast includes Helen Slater, Christian Slater, Dean Stockwell and Peter Coyote.
6. "Ginger Ale Afternoon"
Smith really shows she's got acting chops in this gritty drama set in a trailer park. She plays Bonnie with a sympathetic frankness.
This Stephen King film isn't the best of his genre, but Smith is so believable I had to include it. She truly commits to her fears of machines viciously coming to power.
