"The Brak Show" Volume 1 DVD

About.com Rating four out of Five

From Mike Brown, for About.com

The Bottom Line

To understand Brak is to love him. To not get it is to simply move on without comment. Your head has to be in an Adult Swim place to like him. And most whose head is there, love him, like me. The DVDs have enough to satisfy fans, and are well done, with nice menus. The visible Easter Eggs were a nice touch.
Pros
  • Weird. Funny, but weird.
  • Great extras.
Cons
  • Not for everyone.
  • No straight answer on what Ted Turner thinks of this stuff.

Guide Review - "The Brak Show" Volume 1 DVD

What can I say about a monster named Brak? His simpleton character is extremely consistent, funny, simultaneously sweet and totally amoral. His evil best friend, the mantis Zorak, is funny even while sweetly singing about kicking my ass. His "Father Knows Best" parents trundle out horrible advice, but still manage to keep their bumbling son mostly alive.

What's funny about the show? It manages to find that sweet spot, where it's weird, but not so weird that it's completely random. And it is random, but not so much that it's not funny. Maybe see a "Brak" before you buy the DVD.

The DVDs are great. First of all, it has the first funny "in character" commentary I've ever heard. More funny are the creator commentaries. For instance, I always wondered why Brak's dad was so much smaller than the other characters. The answer is, they made a mistake on the computer, thought it was funny, and ran with it. There's a lot of outtakes from a pilot for a variety show called the "Brak Presents the Brak Show Starring Brak" that are very funny. I wish that there was a little more about how they determined that anyone would watch this show and who said, "This is a great idea." But, oh, well. The DVDs are still pretty nice.
