Daria: The lead character, Daria is a cynical teenager who is the epitome of "teen misfit." She uses her sharp tongue to attack superficiality and shallowness.
Quinn: She is Daria's younger sister. They are very much opposites. Quinn's interests are fashion, boys, and being popular. What little intelligence she has is focused on being cute and, well, popular.
Jane: She is Daria's best friend. She wears her hair cut in an abrupt bob. She also sports the same boots as Daria. She is like Daria in that she is smart and cynical. Because she's an artist, she has explored the world around her with a little more open-mindedness than Daria.
Trent: He is Jane's older brother. Trent is a slacker extraordinaire. He graduated from high school, and now spends his time sleeping or playing in his band, Mystik Spiral. At one time, Daria had a crush on Trent, but now they are very good friends.
Tom: He is Daria's boyfriend, after he first dated Jane. He seems an unlikely match for Daria in that he is wealthy and attends a prep school. But underneath the ivy league exterior he is sarcastic and rebellious.
Daria is gone, but not forgotten.
Daria served up five years of high school angst and dry wit. Daria's monotone voice and earth-tone wardrobe were perfectly matched to her attitude about life. (And you would have never guessed she first appeared on
Beavis and Butthead!)
Having a home on MTV gave Daria the perfect environment for sending out a "girl power" message. As G. J. Connelly said in TV Guide Online, "Without rubbing viewers' noses in feminist dogma, creator Glenn Eichler (who co-wrote the film) and company have created a world where women generally hold sway. Daria's mother, Helen, alternately shallow and shrewd, is the real head of the Morgendorffer household. Money-crazy Ms. Li is the principal of Lawndale High. Levelheaded Jodie is the school's shining academic light. And, of course, Daria's sardonic sidekick, Jane Lane, is our heroine's conscience and sounding board."
