The Looney Tunes Show

Cartoon Network
The Looney Tunes Show is an attempt to re-imagine Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the other Looney Tunes characters, bringing classic cartoon characters into the modern world. However, the show falls short of capturing the wonderful humor and true nature of the original Looney Tunes cartoons. At times The Looney Tunes Show is funny, because even a blind Chip and Dale find an acorn sometimes, but overall The Looney Tunes Show is too slick for its own good.

Ain't I a Stinker

The Looney Tunes Show premiered May 3, 2011 on Cartoon Network. Bugs and Daffy are living together in a house, navigating the routines of modern day-to-day life. Bugs is as brazen and sarcastic. Daffy is narcissistic, sociopathic and paranoid. Somehow in this world, they are best friends, with Daffy as a permanent house guest of Bugs's.

No longer confined to seven-minute shorts, they offer an irreverent take on our modern world and introduce a whole new realm of possibilities. Now Bugs and Daffy can wreak as much havoc at the grocery store or the DMV as they once did in the forest.

The premiere episode, "Best Friends," sets the scene for this unlikely pair's dynamic. Daffy decides the duo can make a quick buck by going on the game show "Besties," where best friends answer questions about one another. However, it becomes quite clear that self-absorbed Daffy knows absolutely nothing about Bugs. Daffy wants to make it up to him with a fabulous cruise, but cannot even do that right.

The plot is too complicated and the humor relies too much on parodying our pop culture, including reality shows and roommate squabbles. These characters are not meant to be catapulted through time into our world. When the show is its funniest, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck revert to their classic selves.

That's All, Folks

Throughout the series, familiar faces from the Looney Tunes universe join Bugs and Daffy. Rounding out the cast are Porky Pig, Speedy Gonzales, Lola, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, the Tasmanian Devil, Marvin the Martian, Pepe Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Granny, the Witch, Gossamer, Tosh and Mac Gopher and the newest character of the bunch, Daffy's girlfriend, Tina.

The series also features Merrie Melodies, which are animated music videos of original songs spotlighting everyone from Elmer Fudd to Pepe Le Pew. I most enjoyed the new cartoons with the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, though watching them in CG was a bit jarring.
