South Park's tenth season episodes p.o.'d a lot of people. Not fans, but subjects of the episodes themselves. In "The Return of Chef," Isaac Hayes is skewered for resigning South Park because he felt Stone and Parker went too far in their depiction of Scientologists in the Tom Cruise episode "Trapped in the Closet." Faux author James Frey and Oprah Winfrey are torn to pieces in "A Million Little Fibers." Al Gore is parodied for his Incovenient Truth tour in "Manbearpig."
These folks should be honored that their antics not only caught the attention of Stone and Parker, but also that they executed the material so well. By the tenth season, South Park is a well-oiled machine, easily tossing out barbed political humor as well as gross-out and plain nutty jokes. It's edgy and silly, at the same time.
I've said it before in my reviews of South Park DVDs: There aren't enough extras! Yes, I enjoy the mini-commentaries at the beginning of each episode. It's great to hear how Matt Stone and Trey Parker decide what an episode will be about, and where their ideas come from. But I still would like to see more interviews, behind the scenes-featurettes, video footage of guest stars recording their characters or making-of featurettes.
Fans of South Park should definitely add this DVD to their collection. But even someone who has never seen the South Park will laugh out loud at these edgy and of-the-moment episodes, as well as the plain silly humor.
