Guide Review - "Mystery Men"

"Mystery Men" tells the tale of Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear) who decides to set loose his enemy, Cassanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush,) when Pepsi axes their deal with Amazing. Amazing figures having someone new to fight will pique Pepsi's interest.

After he is captured, it's up to a bunch of wannabe superheroes to save the day. These guys include Blue Raja (Hank Azaria,) a guy who throws forks and spoons; Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller,)who has incredible temper tantrums; The Bowler (Jeneane Garofalo,) who throws a bowling ball with her father's skull inside, and the shoveler (William H. Macy,) who hits people with his shovel.

Millions were spent on the look of the film, which is fantastic. Unfortunately I wish more time had been spent on the script. This plot and these characters have a couple of jokes built-in, but they don't stretch far enough for a feature length film. Some of the scenes seem like improvs that go on too long.

There are a few extras, for those who are interested. The commentary by director Kinka Usher is probably the most interesting bonus feature. He gives many details about the special effects and what it was like working with the actors.
