African-American Guest Stars on "The Simpsons"

Celebrate Black History

As we all know, characters on "The Simpsons" come in many colors. To celebrate of Black History month, let's review some of the memorable African-American guest stars that have provided voices on "The Simpsons."

Ron Taylor (Bleeding Gums Murphy)
Jazz legend Ron Taylor appeared in two episodes as Bleeding Gums Murphy. In "Moaning Lisa," he became Lisa's saxophone mentor when she got a bad case of the blues. He returned in "Round Springfield," and gave Lisa his saxophone just before he died.

James Earl Jones (Narrator, Maggie)
James Earl Jones distinctive voice can be heard in three episodes. First, he narrated Homer's version of The Raven in "Treehouse of Horror." Next, he provided Maggie's deeply disturbing voice in an alternative universe in "Treehouse of Horror V." Jones re-appeared again briefly at the end of "Das Bus" to tell us that the children were saved from a remote island by Moe.

Michael Jackson (John Jay Smith)
The King of Pop graced Springfield with his presence in "Stark Raving Dad." He played John Jay Smith, a mental patient who is convinced he is Michael Jackson. Due to a contractual agreement with his recording company, Jackson could not be credited, or sing during the episode.

Magic Johnson
When Homer saved the nuclear plant from a meltdown in "Homer Defined," Magic gave Homer a telephone call to congratulate him.

Barry White
Soulful singer Barry White acted as Grand Marshall for "Whacking Day." In the finale, Lisa and Bart recruit his bass voice to bring the snakes to safety. He also appeared as a contestant on Springfield Squares in "Krusty Gets Kancelled."

James Brown
James Brown performed at the Do What You Feel Festival in "Bart's Inner Child."

Cypress Hill
Sen Dog, B-Real and Mixmaster Muggs rapped at "Homerpalooza" in the seventh season.
