A smart, engaging, funny, subversive show with a big heart that never melts into cheese. Why didn't we watch this when it was on? As a DVD, the packaging is fetching and easy to use. The menus are convenient without sacrificing creativity, with a different tableau for each disc and episode. The extras are well-thought out for fans of the show, with funny, interesting commentaries, extra scenes and production art.

Guide Review - "Futurama" Volume 4 DVD

"Futurama" is enjoying a new popularity on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and I say, "Huzza!" The collected adventures of the Planet Express Service are always funny, thoughtful, and show surprising touches of heart. Sure, the disparate, seemingly selfish members of the Planet Express Delivery Service, are rude, lazy oddballs. But they still look out for each other.

The heart of the show, Fry, the misplaced 1999 pizza delivery loser, sometimes remembers to better himself, mostly through his unrequited love for the beautiful, one-eyed, capable Leela (watch for her make out session with William Shatner.) Bender, the alcoholic lunkhead robot, follows his best friend, Fry, into whatever mayhem strikes their fancy. Bender even gets to save the world with a well-timed "emission."

Every episode on this disc is a winner. Dick Nixon's head-in-jar President, always funny, "Sock it to me!" The single greatest "Star Trek" parody ever (more heads in jars!) noteworthy for Fry's immediate profound loyalty to the replacement "Star Trek" character, Welchie. The surprisingly touching love of Fry's 1999 dog's unflinching loyalty to his frozen master. The completely random oil wrestling of Leela and Amy, ignored by all the men.

One of the unexpected treasures of this is the commentaries. These are people who love the show and want you to know why. The show's creation sounds like a gas and there's no Joe Hollywood, too-cool-for-school garbage in there. A great DVD set for a great show.
