The Bottom Line

"Futurama" is a crazy, good-time place where wise-cracking, cigar-chomping robots hobnob with idiots, shapely cyclops, monsters and other types of idiots. But "Futurama" has heart, moxy and survived four seasons of the worst time slot in the business. How did it survive? It's funny. This is a low-cost option for people who are interested. Very worth it if you're not already on the bandwagon.
Pros
  • A great jumping on point for people considering a change to a "Futurama" lifestyle.
  • Funny.
  • Cute DVD packaging for non-fanatics.
Cons
  • It's difficult for me to imagine not wanting all four seasons in their sublime completeness.

Guide Review - "Futurama" Monster Robot Maniac Fun Collection DVD

"Futurama," "Futurama," "Futurama." Sometimes, I just don't know what to do with you. The first thought upon seeing this cheaply packaged "best of" was that, for whatever reason, the creators were trying to fleece me, knowing that if they wrote "Futurama" on a corpse, I would dig it up and cover it with sweet kisses. (I'm coming for you, Frank Sutton!) But now I think I get it: they want other people to love it like I love it. And they figure that the other people won't pay forty dollars to find out if they love it.

Well, for those of you that don't know, "Futurama" is funny and, unlike cousin "Simpsons," actually has a continuity (up to a point.) Main character Fry's heartbreaking, relentless, plodding pursuit of Leela, the one-eyed female Han Solo, makes even the most jaded lothario remember what it was like to have a painful crush on the perfect woman. There's Bender, whose twisted morals never quite allow him to belive that he'll have friends. He's the bending unit robot who is just a wasp nest of funny. Oh, and the rest. Matt Groening picked a show from each season and, basically, three of them are my favorites from those seasons, too.

The DVDs are nice, but not for collectors. No commentaries. The only difference is that it has these intro's that are short and certainly not worth buying if you already have all four seasons. But, hey, it's only like $15. That's two bad beers in New York City. Buy it.
