Futurama is the sci fi cartoon from the creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening. The show aired sporadically from 1999 to 2003. Unfortunately, Fox treated it much as it used to treat Family Guy; Futurama was put on hiatus frequently and its timeslot changed far too often. So eventually, Futurama was canceled. And again, much like Family Guy, Futurama has proven its popularity with good ratings on Adult Swim, with Bender emerging as a favorite character. The ratings have convinced Fox execs to greenlight some straight-to-DVD Futurama movies. Here's hoping they're as great as the original show.

Bender

Futurama - Bender

Bender from is a crass, beer-guzzling robot who becomes Fry's best friend.

Bender is the robot on Futurama. He must drink alcohol to stay sober and alive. His heroics have been unexpected and many, including using his flatulence to save the world. His name comes from his function as an actual bender of pipes and metal. But it has double meaning, since going on a "bender" means drinking a lot, which he does. He has super-strength (hence, the bending) and has even fathered a little robot.

Bender is played by John DiMaggio, who also plays Jake on Adventure Time.

Leela

Futurama - Leela
'Futurama' Pictures Captain Leela from 'Futurama'. Twentieth Century Fox

Leela from .

Leela is the captain of the Planet Express delivery ship on Futurama. All her life, she thought she was a one-eyed alien from another planet. But she discovers that she is a mutant, left at an orphange when she was a baby. She is reunited with her parents in the sewers. Leela has had relations with Zapp Brannigan (unfortunately), but the closest thing she has to a romantic relationship is her friendship and flirtation with Fry.

Favorite Leela Episodes:

  • "Loves Labor Lost in Space," when we meet Zapp Brannigan for the first time, and he sets his eyes on Leela, Season 1.
  • "Leela's Homeworld," when we find out who Leela's parents really are (and they're not aliens), Season 4.
  • "In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela," when Leela and Zapp are "stranded" in a natural paradise, Season 6.
