Guide Review - "Family Guy" Vol. 3 DVD
"North by North Quahog," the first episode of "Family Guy's" return, showed some bite by poking fun at Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ." "Don't Make Me Over" takes on America's obsessions with reality TV fame, beast-to-beauty makeover stories and "jailbait" pop stars.
Aside from those episodes, not too many are as racy or offensive as past episodes, such as "A Hero Sits Next Door" or "Holy Crap." Thanks to Fox's fear of the FCC, creator Seth MacFarlane has had to pull back on some jokes that in the past he would have gone too far with.
In fact, I heard MacFarlane discussing this very issue on an episode of "Dinner for Five." He said that in "Blind Ambition," where Peter tries to set a new world record by eating the most nickels, originally he wanted to show Peter on the toilet with the noise of a winning slot machine. He was asked to change it because it was too offensive.
Other than the episodes being too mild, the DVD set is great to own. It's a hysterical show. Commentaries are funny and plentiful. The extra features have some insightful and entertaining behind-the-scenes footage for fans. The timeliness and extras make it worth the price.
