The Bottom Line

As the durability of a show perseveres, one can only question the tenacity of its will to remain true to its integrity. It’s a good thing the creators of The Simpsons were more concerned with writing good jokes that make us laugh, than buying into stuffy ideals of successful programming. Season 8 holds some of the most memorable and quotable episodes. Doing what Bob Geldof couldn't do with Band Aid, The Simpsons eighth season has managed to hold it together.

Guide Review - The Simpsons - The Complete Eighth Season DVD

Eight years is a long time for anything to be successful. Heck, most marriages are lucky if they make it that far, especially the ones with out the assistance of a shotgun to your head.

The Simpsons has managed to do what 70's housewives and Tupperware have done for Jello salad: keep it fresh. At this point, if I have to tell you what The Simpsons means to American TV, stop reading this right now. Turn the computer off. Go back to crocheting your afghan or reading the Saturday Evening Post. I mean it. I'm not kidding.

For the rest of you, the 1996-1997 season of The Simpsons saw the appearance of a wide galaxy of guest stars, such as Rodney Dangerfield, Albert Brooks, Jon Lovitz, the late, great Johnny Cash, and Frasier's David Hyde Pierce.

Memorable episodes include "Homer's Phobia," with a brilliant guest appearance by the campy Jon Waters. Also included is "Homer vs. the 18th Amendment," which shows us a sober Homer is not a fun Homer. Lastly, let us not forget the introduction of "Grimey" in the episode "Homer's Enemy."

Extras are abounding inside this slick packaging. For once, the audio commentaries repel the typical snooze fests other DVDs induce. Look for the insightful animators commentaries, especially. The deleted scenes bring new life to the clips that got swept away, and the real-life Simpson home in Las Vegas is fascinating.
