The Bottom Line

Since reality shows are everywhere, the time is ripe for "Drawn Together," an animated parody of shows like "Big Brother" or MTV's "Real World." If you love reality TV, or hate it, then watching "Drawn Together" will provide you with some familiar scenarios turned upside down in laughable ways. But after a while, the characters may seem too harsh and the set ups a little too repetitive.

Guide Review - "Drawn Together" - The Complete First Season DVD

"Drawn Together" is an animated comedy where a variety of cartoon characters are living in one house, much like "Big Brother" or "Real World." This set up provides a lot of laughs at reality TV's expense.

The characters themselves are parodies of well-known cartoon types, like Princess Clara, who is a combination of Disney's Ariel and Belle and all those other lead females in Disney movies. Another character is Foxxy, who's a tough black woman torn almost straight from "Josie and the Pussycats," except that she seems to like Princess Clara a whole lot.

This is a very un-PC show, allowing these messed up characters to act like the evil twins of the characters they're based on. The reality TV set up gives these characters chances to prove their stereotypes are true, insult each other, and basically make you feel guilty for ever loving reality shows, anime, "SpongeBob SquarePants" and other staples of American pop culture.

Though the concept is very clever, the jokes get old fast. After one or two episodes, the situations seem repetitive and very predictable. After a while, the jokes are just punchlines without much set up, and even then they're not that funny anymore.

Yeah, "South Park" is raunchy and un-PC, but it sometimes has heart, and the characters, though crudely drawn, aren't one-dimensional. The characters in "Drawn Together" are, but on purpose. But even on purpose, it gets old.

The extras are fun, mainly the karaoke sing-along and the censored game.
