Top 10 "The Simpsons" Comics

By Nancy Basile, About.com

Here's a list of the best comic books from "The Simpsons" for the discriminating fan. "The Simpsons" Comics are published by Bongo Comics. Lately the comic books are funnier, and seem more clever, than the TV show. If you're a fan who hasn't discovered this goldmine of humor, get digging!

1. "Simpsons" Comics Wingding

I love this collection of comics (issues #19 to #23) because of the wild antics of Bart Simpson. This "Simpsons" comic book also includes a parody of right-wing propaganda in the form of "Rev. Lovejoy's Hellfire Comics." Bart has taken the time to add his own comments and graphics to the piece. Brilliant.

2. "Simpsons" Comics Simpsorama

In this great collection, the Simpson family tries to become members of a biosphere. You can imagine what happens from there. Also, this is a great book for fans of Ned Flanders. His evil alter-ego is unleashed after he's kidnapped by aliens. Very funny stuff!

3. "Simpsons" Comics Extravaganza

These are the first four issues of "Simpsons" comics released by Bongo Comics. You can see where the franchise is headed with its off-the-wall humor and fun graphics. Homer has an affair with Selma? Yecch.

4. "Simpsons" Comics Spectacular

I'm a Lisa fan, so I like this collection. It includes a story of Lisa joining a band with Otto, the bus driver. There's also some Barney, McBain, Homer and Bart thrown into other stories.

5. "Simpsons" Comics Strike Back

First, I love this title. Second, this is a funny comic book because it branches out with stories about secondary characters. McBain tries to shape up Springfield. Patty and Selma become flight attendants. (Yikes!) And Grampa tells his family about the days before TV.

6. "Simpsons" Comics A-Go-Go

Wow, I love this title, too! And the cover is psychadelic. This collection includes some stories involving secondary characters, too, such as Martin and Mr. Burns. My favorite stories are about Maggie running away when Marge starts a daycare, and the "bizarro" world of Springfield when Frink's lab has a mishap.

7. "Simpsons" Comics Royale

This comic book gets mixed reviews from fans, but I enjoyed it for two reasons. First, it includes a comic focused on Lisa titled "Lisa's Adventures in Wordland." It is complicated and even includes its own reference. The second reason is for an odd comic about Sideshow Mel that must be read to be appreciated.

8. "Simpsons" Comics Big Bonanza

Fans of Homer Simpson will especially like this book. It includes two stories about Homer. In one, he tries to become the wrestling champion of Springfield. In another, he develops amnesia and thinks he is Radioactive Man.

9. "Simpsons" Comics on Parade

There are some very interesting stories in this comic book. I ranked it as ninth just because they didn't tickle my funny bone like the previous comics. There are parodies of our political system, TV talk shows and that bus movie with Keanu Reeves, "Speed."

10. "Simpsons" Comics Madness

This entire comic book collection takes place in almost a "Twilight Zone" of "The Simpsons." That premise makes it fun, but not always funny. Avid fans will have fun finding references to old TV episodes in "John's Cockamamies Collectible."
