Nancy Cartwright

A Star Is Born

By Nancy Basile, About.com

Nancy Cartwright worked with Daws Butler During her years at UCLA. At his house, she would spend the afternoon going over copy Daws had written, playing at the mike and creating all kinds of characters. Finally, after months of working together and having put together a basic demo tape, Daws felt Nancy was ready to be introduced to Hanna-Barbera. He brought her along to a recording session for Popeye.

Because Daws' introduction, Nancy Cartwright soon found herself auditioning for the most creative animation houses in Los Angles. Only three months later she was cast as "Gloria" in Richie Rich.

"I never settled for just a job. It had to be in line with what I wanted to do."

That Spring, Nancy Cartwright performed in an original play called The Transgressor. The director was so impressed that he asked her if she would consider dropping out of school the next fall, so she could revive her performance in the play at The Gene Dynarski Theatre in Hollywood. Nancy jumped at the chance. The play garnered several Drama-Logue Awards and Drama-Critics Circle Awards. It was a huge success, and so was Nancy.

Nancy Cartwright went on to be cast in Marian Rose White, a movie of the week, Twilight Zone: The Movie and Flesh and Blood. She also guest starred on Cheers and Mr. Belvedere. But all the while she was providing cartoon voices for My Little Pony, Glo-Friends, Pound Puppies, Snorks, Galaxy High and Space Ace, to name a few.

She also performed in numerous stage productions, such as Potpourri and Porcupines and Guys and Dolls.
