"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" Vol. 2 DVD

About.com Rating 2.5

From Mike Brown, About.com Guest

The Bottom Line

"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" just doesn't have it. It's weird, but it has a formula. The animation is interesting, but is limited, and not just by budget. Too often, the show is just not interesting.

What is it missing? Who knows? Somewhere between what makes "Space Ghost" awesome and "Fish Police" awful lurks "ATHF."

Great DVD, if the "Force" is your thing. The extras will satisfy.

Guide Review - "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" Vol. 2 DVD

Following the adventures of Frylock, Master Shake and Meatwad should be my thing. They're crazy, self-centered, and offer something that isn't available anywhere else on TV. But they ain't my thing.

Sure, they're funny. But they're not too funny. The characters are irritating. It's like if Barney was the main character on "The Simpsons." Frylock has sense, but no soul. Of course, this is massively forgivable if the show has that intangible ingredient that makes it something completely different and funny (again, see "Space Ghost.")

Does anyone read Evan Dorkin's "Milk and Cheese?" "ATHF's" character designs remind me of that, not exactly, but reminiscent. And neighbor Carl looks right out of "Beavis and Butt-head." Is that bad? Well, no. They're both done on tight budgets. But it's just not great.

And why do they have the formula, starting with the scientist? That joke got old fast.

Although I don't love the show, the DVD is awesome. There are some insane extras. I watched the "Baffler Meal" video before the "Space Ghost" episode on the DVD and had no idea what the hell was going on. The commentaries are interesting. too.

But I can't shake the feeling that the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" target audience is stoned teenagers.
