The Bottom Line
"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is about three foodstuffs who live
together, but don't get along. There's Frylock, the smart one, Master Shake, the selfish one, and Meatwad, the unbelievably dumb one. They sort of solve problems for people, sort of don't. The show isn't as surreal as most of the Adult Swim shows, and there doesn't seem to be a uniting idea so adults can claim to have some reason for watching it. (For instance, "South Park" is deceptively bright.) The DVD is fine, although pedestrian.

- Comes out of the gate strong with two classic episodes.
- Funnyish.
- It's nice to see something like this getting attention.

Guide Review - "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" Vol. 1 DVD
"Aqua Teen Hunger Force" misses the mark. It's funny, sure, sometimes, but that's about it. The other shows on Adult Swim skewer and satire. "ATHF" just seems weird. But committee weird. There's not that unifying idea that makes it really something.
Sure, Beavis and Butt-head were idiots. But they were always idiots and how others reacted to them showed us something. I love in "Escape from the Leprechauns" how the simple idea, mean Leprechauns, keeps getting crazier and crazier. But it doesn't make me want to watch more. And most of the other episodes contain a lot of sitting around babbling.
The DVD is okay, with some interesting commentary which is great for fans of the show.
This warning may apply to all Adult Swim DVDs, but maybe check out "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" on TV before investing in the DVD. If it's for you, this DVD is great. But it's not for me.
