American Dad Vol. 2 DVD

Fox Home Entertainment

The Bottom Line

Here’s the drill America, Stan Smith is back and he’s taking names. That’s right. Season two of American Dad is here beaming with flag-waving pride. The jokes are at attention, and they're marching to the front. Just when you thought patriotism couldn’t get much better, it does. (And by patriotism, I meant rapier-sharp wit and humor.) American Dad Vol. 2 DVD beefs up where season one fell short. The writers bunkered down and got the stories tight and the characters even tighter.
Pros
  • More Seth McFarlene.
  • LOTS of episodes.
  • Commentary on every ‘sode.
Cons
  • Just your typical extras.
  • Joke set-ups are still a little tedious at times.

Description

  • 3 discs.
  • Extras include Deleted Scenes (With Play-All Button), "Season One Remembered" and "An American Dad Like No Other."
  • More extras are "Drawing Roger," "Multi-Angle Piece" and Commentaries by Creators and Cast.

Guide Review - American Dad Volume Two DVD

American Dad Vol. 2 DVD is finally out, and for us McFarlane fanboys it’s definitely got a seat on the shelf. Compared to the first season of American Dad, we find a much more cohesive show, detaching from the formulaic set-up and branching out towards its own style.

One of the great things about this DVD is having commentary on all the episodes, from the writers, to the producers and (gasp!) the art directors and animators. It was great to go back and watch all eighteen episodes with the peanut gallery commenting.

Another thing about season two of American Dad is the strength behind the writing. I’m guessing after the first season's relative success they were able to garner better talent. All the episodes are strong with a few really standing out.

"Dungeons and Wagons" takes a page from the South Park episode "Good Times with Weapons" and has the graphic rendering of a role-playing game.

Another funny episode is "Lincoln Lover," in which Stan becomes an unwitting member of the Log Cabin Republicans. Cuervo-cosmo-tini anyone?

"Finances with Wolves" has Francine opening a muffin kiosk, and by a turn of events, Klaus the goldfish in the body of a black man.

"Ghost of Xmas" past is another winner with Stan going back in time to save his beloved Christmas.

A much more recognizable addition to the second season episodes isthe inclusion of a lesson learned at the end of every episode. Granted, Mr. Rogers it is not, but the morals are still there.

Overall a good box set worth the money. Tons of deleted scenes overflow from the special features. I’d just like to see what the terrorists have to say to Mr. Smith about that.
