Before You Buy Animation Art Cels

By Nancy Basile, About.com

Animation art, or animation cels, are considered to be top of the line collectibles for fans of cartoons. Animation art is also treasured by some art collectors. Some even consider cels to be investments. Because it can be a pricey hobby, you should consider several factors before buying any animation cels.

Set a Budget or Limit

Decide how much you want to spend before you start browsing. Limited edition sericels, silk-screened works that did not appear in a show, are the most affordable. They sell for around $150. Original production cels from a show sell for $400 to $600. Limited-edition, hand-painted cels can command up to $2,500.

Beware of the Seller

Buying from a reputable gallery is your best bet. If you bid on art online, try to bid on a cel that is local so you can inspect it. Don't judge by a picture alone. You may be disappointed when you receive your damaged, or fake, animation art.

Do Your Homework

It pays to research the kind of cel you want to purchase. The more knowledge you have about the subject, the smarter you will be when it comes to prices. For instance, knowing that cels with original backgrounds, instead of reproduction backgrounds or none at all, can help you spot a treasure. Comparison shopping in galleries and online will help give you an idea of price guidelines.

Be Realistic

Don't expect your animation to become a prime investment. Though they are expensive, rarely do cels become worth much more than their original asking price. Occasionally a piece can sell for much more at an auction. Just don't expect to send your kids to college by selling your cel. Enjoying as art, and as a fan, is much more valuable.
