On Sunday, May 9th, Stephen Hawking appeared as a guest star on "The Simpsons." Or did he? There were many viewers and fans who assumed the electronic voice was fabricated by "The Simpsons" production team. Unfortunately, this hysterical episode even spawned a discussion as to whether or not Stephen Hawking is still alive.

Well, "D'oh!" to all of those people because that really was the brilliant physicist. Mr. Hawking's guest appearance was confirmed in a short article in the "New York Times" on May 12, 1999. Mr. Hawking was quoted as saying, "I think ["The Simpsons"] is one of the cleverest shows on television, and it always has a moral."

Matt Selman, one of the show's writers, was also quoted in the "New York Times" article. He had read in an Internet chat that fans were suggesting the producers faked the scientist's voice. "But that was his computer you were hearing," Mr. Selman said. "A lot of the writers on the show are nerdy science guys anyway, and we were in awe of him. He was unbelievably cool."

In the episode titled "They Saved Lisa's Brain," Stephen Hawking successfully stopped Springfield's greedy chapter of the Mensa Society from ruining the town. He flew Lisa to safety just as the crowd got out of hand, and the gazebo collapsed into dust.
